Week 16

Holiday Party

Mark your calendars! Firsties will have their holiday parties on Friday, December 20 at 2:35pm. We’d love for you to join us if you’re able. Please add your name to this list if you plan to attend. More information to follow on possible supply donations will be coming from individual teachers via email.

What’s Up?

  • We will be finishing up our work with the sun, moon, and stars this week.

  • Sneaky e (vowel-consonant-e) patterns continue to be our focus during our skills block.

  • In math we are learning to make a 10 or look for a double in order to add with three addends. We are also working on “seeing 9, making 10.”

Ask Your Firstie:

  • How do you see a 9 and make 10? (With an equation such as 9 + 6, we are working to see it instead as 10 + 5).

  • What are some examples of doubles equations (2 + 2, 6 + 6, etc.)

  • What happens if you add a Sneaky e to the end of each of these words? What will the new word be?  cut, cub, rat, kit, sit, bit, pet, hop, can, cap, tub, plan (cute, cube, rate, kite, site, bite, Pete, hope, cane, cape, tube, plane)

It’s really helpful to have snow pants, gloves, hats, etc. all labeled with a child’s name or initials.

What’s Up?

  • Our skills block focus will be on vowel-consonant-e words to make the long /u/ sound in words like tune, cube, rule, and cute. Our high frequency words this week are blue, true and use

  • We will be adding with three addends.

  • We will continue to work on reading fluency and sentence writing.

  • Students will continue to reflect on where the sun and moon appear in the sky and what happens when the sun and moon are at different places in the sky.
