Ice Skating

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will be able to skate on our rescheduled date of January 28! Please be sure your Firsties know their shoe sizes. Ms. Gould’s class will leave Lincoln at 9:40 and Mrs. Fiesbeck’s class at 10:30. We will enjoy hot chocolate and a relaxing walk back to school. 

First Grade Musical-Pajama Party

Has your student mentioned that they have to speak a line into a microphone? Have they been humming some new tunes lately? Students will perform Pajama Party for the Lincoln student body on February 4th. On this day students are encouraged to wear pajamas to school and bring a small-ish stuffed animal.

Firsties are set to take the big stage at St. Joe High School on Wednesday, February 5 at 5:45pm. Please bring the entire family to enjoy this fun performance that the kiddos have been working hard on for weeks.

All three elementary schools have their 1st graders performing on the same evening in back-to-back shows. Lincoln will be second. Please arrive ON TIME at 5:35. Another performance will be concluding. Please remain in the lobby until the previous show concludes. Firsties should stay with their adults until called to perform.

Keep in mind that parking at the High School can be challenging, especially if multiple events are happening at the same time. Please allow plenty of time to find parking.

Science and Culture Night

Lincoln’s Science & Culture Night is scheduled for Thursday, January 30th from 6-8pm. This is an unforgettable evening for our Lincoln students, filled with hands-on learning and fun! To find out more about this event please email Catherine at catherinebkirshenbaum@gmail.com.

Valentine’s Day

• More information is to come, but please mark your calendars for February 14 at 1:20pm for our class parties. 

• Students are encouraged to bring in Valentines for their classmates. We will send home a paper copy of our classlists so that your Firstie may include the name of each classmate. We each have 26 students. 

• We will be decorating bags together in class for students to use to collect their Valentines.

We are working on:

With the snow days last week our academic update hasn’t changed much.

• Comparing 2 digit numbers based on the values of the tens and ones digits

• Using the symbols < > = properly with 2 digit numbers

• Mentally adding and subtracting 10

• Reading and writing high frequency words: before, course, four, heart, and yours

• /ar/ spelled ar; /or/ spelled or

• We are beginning our next Language Arts module. In this module, students build their literacy skills as they engage in an in-depth study of birds’ bodies. The module focuses on big ideas derived from the Next Generation Science Standards: Animals have physical features that help them survive; animals behave in ways that help them survive.

• Over the next several weeks we will focus on building background knowledge about birds.

• What is a stronger adjective for the word small?

• What makes a bird a bird?

• What is 27 + 10? 36 - 10?

Week 19

Ice Skating

Hurray! It’s time for this special Lincoln tradition. Thanks to our amazing PTO, each class has the privilege of walking over to the John and Dede Howard Ice Rink for some time on the ice. There is no cost for students. Skates are provided. Ms. Gould’s class will leave Lincoln at 9:40 and Mrs. Fiesbeck’s class at 10:30. We will enjoy hot chocolate and a relaxing walk back to school. 

Hat Day

National Hat Day is Wednesday, January 15. Firsties can wear whatever fun hat in the classroom they would like!

Academics

• We will learn to summarize fictional elements as we read a variety of fun texts.

• Our skills focus will be on long /0/ spelled oll, olt, and old and long /i/ spelled ind and ild.

• High frequency words this week are: almost, both, children, wind

• We will continue to practice adding and subtracting multiples of 10 and building understanding that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones.

• We will also work to represent the base-ten structure of numbers up to 99 using numbers, drawings, and words.

Week 18

Happy New Year!

We hope you had a wonderful break! We are so excited to see your Firsties at school tomorrow! This time of year is where the magic happens in First Grade! It is remarkable how all the work we’ve been doing really clicks during these winter months.  This week we will spend time revisiting our routines, procedures, and expectations to set us up for smooth sailing during the months ahead.

We will work on:

• Developing an understanding of the structure of numbers in base 10 

• Seeing that the two digits of a two-digit number represent how many tens and ones there are

• Adding and subtracting multiples of 10

• Using action verbs and possessive nouns

• Retelling details using action verbs

• Making inferences

• Reading and spelling CVCe words
