We are working on:


  • Adding to 100 with and without making a ten

  • Subtraction fluency

  • High frequency words: during, learn, sure

  • Reviewing contractions, /er, /or/, /ar/, /ir/, /olt/, /ost/, /ild/, /ind/ sounds

  • Researching bird beaks


Ask your Firstie:


  • What do you know about bird beaks? 

  • What do you wonder about beaks?

  • What is something you’re good at in school?

  • What is something you would like to do better at school?


March is Reading Month

We would love to have YOU come read to the class during the month of March! Please look over the sign up sheet and add your name to a day and time that works with your schedule.

Winter Conferences

If you haven’t heard from us, it means we feel that a conference is not needed at this time. However, if you would like to schedule a time to sit down with either of us, please send us an email.


We are working on:

  • Ordering 2 digit numbers

  • Building 2 digit numbers in multiple ways

  • Using text features

  • Growing as researchers

  • High frequency words: another, brother, father, mother

  • Contractions: didn’t, they’re, she’ll, he’d, I’m, you’ve, it’s, don’t, where’s, couldn’t, we’re, he’ll


Ask your Firstie:

  • What functions do wings have other than flying?

  • What is the weirdest fact about feathers you’ve learned?

  • Put these numbers in order from least to greatest: 27, 19, 36, 94, 49.  How did you determine how to do that?

Winter Conferences

If we feel that a conference is needed at this time you will be hearing from us this week to schedule a time to sit down together. If you do not hear from us but would like to schedule a conference, please reach out via email this week.


Valentine’s Day

  • Mark your calendars for February 14 at 1:20pm for our class parties. Parents are welcome to join. 

  • Students are encouraged to bring in Valentines for their classmates. We will send home a paper copy of our classlists so that your Firstie may include the name of each classmate. We each have 26 students. 

  • We will be decorating bags together in class for students to use to collect their Valentines.


We are working on:

  • Comparing numbers to 120

  • Using symbols to compare numbers to 120 (< > =)

  • Creating a final annotated sketch of a bird that includes a heading, labels, and captions

  • Continuing our work with the /er/ sound spelled ir, er, ur, and or


Ask your Firstie:

  • What is a caption?

  • What are some unique features of bird feet?

  • How would you read these expressions: 109 < 119, 91 > 19, 77= 77?

Ice skating was a blast! Thanks to everyone who was able to come and help out!


Upcoming Week

This is a BIG week in First Grade! 

Tuesday is our 101st day celebration AND our in-school performance of Pajama Party!! Remember to send Firsties in PJs with a stuffed animal on Tuesday. 

**Wednesday is our main performance of Pajama Party at St. Joe High School. Please arrive by 5:35! You will not want to miss this! Students need to wear pajamas and bring a stuffed animal.  Upon arrival, please wait in the lobby until the previous show ends. Students should remain with parents until otherwise instructed by Mrs. Richards (or another teacher).

**Keep in mind that parking can be challenging at the High School, particularly if multiple events are happening. Please allow extra time.

  • Learning all we can about physical characteristics of birds

  • Reading and writing words with the patterns ir and er and ur in words like: hurt, turtle, world, harder, hamburgers, shirt, skirt, and farmer.

  • High frequency words: color, earth, world, work, world


Ask your Firstie:

  • What do you know about the green bee eater, the great spotted woodpecker, and mallards?

  • What are some different functions of feathers?

  • What shapes can you see on birds?
