Thanksgiving Luncheon

This Lincoln tradition is such a special time! Hopefully you’ve seen in Mrs. Knuth’s blogs all of the details about volunteering if you’re interested. For the children, this is a meaningful and memorable day. We are lovingly served a family-style meal. We teachers eat with our classes and together we converse about all that we have to be thankful for and display that gratitude in the time we spend together. Traditionally, students and staff at Lincoln dress up for this celebration. First graders especially enjoy seeing the kindergarteners perform the songs that just one year ago they themselves were singing! The date is this Thursday, November 21st.

Report Cards

Report cards will come home with your child. Please sign and return the envelope so we know you’ve received the report card. 

A Note from our Curriculum Director

As shared at Back to School Night, we are piloting new ELA instructional materials in grades K-5. This resource offers a rigorous and balanced literacy approach for our learners, engaging students in reading, writing, listening and speaking. While our commitment to addressing essential ELA standards has not changed, the order and manner in which standards are assessed in this pilot may be different than in past years. As such, you may not see a reported measure for every ELA standard on your child’s report card. Please also refer to the comments provided by your child’s teacher, as well as ongoing communication and conferencing, regarding your child’s progress in ELA. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Supplies

We have some fun activities planned leading up to Thanksgiving. We will be making balloon creations and showing them to a few classes as a Thanksgiving parade. To do this we could use a few supplies. If you happen to have any of these things around the house we will put them to good use! 

• Two sided tape (we will need lots of this!)

• Straws

• Super thin dowel rods

• Clear packaging tape

Each classroom could also use some gallon and quart-size ziplock bags.

Stuff-a-Truck

Our fifth graders have set an amazing goal. They have challenged our school to donate 1000 non-perishable food items to be distributed to families in need throughout our community this holiday season. Please join us in helping meet this goal and fulfill a need! Fifth graders came and spoke to each class. Firsties are excited to help out! Please donate if you're able.

What’s Up?

• Our space studies continue!

• Story elements are becoming second nature.

• We’re settling in to some nonfiction main idea/detail work.

• In math we continue to hone our skills and consider various ways to add and subtract.

• Our skill focus leading up to Thanksgiving will be spelling long a and o sounds using vowel-consonant-e patterns in words like zone, cane, bake, cone, and flame. Our high frequency words are their, these, and those.

Ask your Firstie:

• What is a homophone? What are some examples?

• What are some adjectives to describe our home? Our car? Our family?

• What is a noun? What are some examples?

• If you read the words altogether, sum, in all, or total do you think you’ll need to add or subtract?
